Clautiere Cellars, Paso Robles

We showed up to this very unique winery in Paso Robles at about 4 o’clock on a Sunday afternoon. It was so quiet that we thought perhaps it was closed, but it very much open and we’re glad we stopped by.

The grounds were very pleasant, decorated with interesting artwork (created by the owner) and plenty of plants shading the patio. The tasting room was decorated with a striking black and white tile floor, lavender walls with gold accents, giving it a very “Alice in Wonderland” feel. But the thing that really sets this winery apart, is their “playroom”…

Reserved for wine club members only, there is a large room off to the side, full of mirrors and various different wigs. I can only imagine the fun in this room after a solid afternoons wine tasting with a group of friends! We weren’t technically allowed in there, but since we were the only two visitors at the time, I did sneak in for a quick look, and my wife snapped a couple of photos of me in a rather dashing dreadlock wig – 25 years after I cut my own dreads off. It was an amusing flashback, but I don’t think I’ll grow them back!

The wines were good, and we bought four bottles, including two of their 2012 Estate Grand Rouge and a couple of bottles of white. I mean… how can you not buy a wine called “2 Cocky Sisters”?
